Nicholas Negroponte, the Chairman of the MIT Media Lab, discussed the $100 laptop at a United Nations meeting in Tunisia yesterday.
Negroponte’s non-profit organization, One Laptop Per Child, is in the final stages of negotiations with manufacturers and the hope is to begin receiving orders by early next year. The $100 laptop was designed by MIT Media Lab with the goal to distribute the machine to millions of indigent children around the world. According to CNET, the system can run for up to 40 minutes in black and white mode on one minute’s worth of hand cranked power. Here is a FAQ on the $100 Laptop project.
